REPORT BACK: EVERYTHING I KNOW

All artists are inspired daily by the artists we look up to, those who came before us and paved the way, those who showcase the skills we ache to possess. For myself, as well as countless others, Joshua Carlton is one such artist. With over 30 years under his belt as a tattooer in the upper echelon of the industry and exhibiting an impressive body of work as a fine art oil painter it’s hard not to admire his mastery. So when he announced a mentorship opportunity through his Everything I Know course I absolutely could not pass it up.

Aptly titled, Joshua’s course covers everything he knows, every bit of knowledge he has acquired over his decades long career presented to a limited number of students over Zoom once per week over a 4 week period. The topics covered range from his hybridized opaque black and grey tattoo methods to color harmony, photography, reference and design tips, to painting and beyond. You also gain access to his private Facebook group where you can sift through tons of posts to obtain even more knowledge, post your work to show your progress or gain some insight through critiques, all of which Joshua is fairly active in and contributes generously. He has offered to continue to make himself available for questions even after the course has ended and has extended invites to students to guest spot at his studio for more in depth one on one training. While the cost of this course is what you’d expect from such a master of his craft, the return on the investment is worth far more than the money spent. You’ll walk away with a comprehensive understanding of new techniques and approaches as well as an opportunity to level up with decades worth of knowledge. Oh, and grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, can’t forget that!

It was such an honor and privilege to take part in this course, to be able to learn from such an expert of his craft, to ask questions directly and have the opportunity to work under him as well as be part of an amazing Facebook group. I can’t wait to continue to learn through the practice of these newfound methods and grow infinitely as an artist. Many thanks to you Joshua, I appreciate you and your knowledge more than I can deliver, I owe you the debt of my gratitude. Thank you so much!
